Doorman of building (2)
I have lived and worked in this passageway since December 1977, the passageway originally was mostly residential, and through the years the units were rented out to business and companies leaving very few residents, in this building there are only two residents left, one lives in the US and her apartment is closed up, the other one lives alone on the 6th floor.
The passageway is widely popular in the downtown area, before the apartments are vacated they are already leased to new parties, despite the fact that the rent is relatively higher than other places, starting at 7000 EGP per month.
Films and TV series such as the the Yacoubian Building film, are shot in Behler passage because of its’ strong character that represents Downtown.
Originally I’m from Esna, but I moved here with the family for work, I stay in Cairo all the time while my wife returns home every once in while.
Most of the shops were different 30 years ago, the clothes shop in front of the building was once a very famous hairdresser called Ebrahim, the next shop was originally a dress tailor, the corner shop on Qasr el nile was a Swiss air agency, and one of the shops was for machines and office supplies, however one after the other they have all become clothes shops.
Most of the restoration work is on the main street corners while the passages are neglected, the government should make the business owners and commercial shops pitch in for the restoration process for a better result.
